  • The Impossible Fortune (Thursday Murder Club #5)

I really can’t help loving these crime-solving oldies. This book has a slightly different feel after Stephen’s death in the previous instalment, and you can really sense it in Elizabeth—she’s more muted, more inward, which adds a gentle shift in tone. I enjoyed getting to know Joanna, Joyce’s daughter, a bit more too; she brings a fun little lift to the story. What I appreciate most, though, is how honest these characters are. Their vulnerability, the way they face growing older, and the fact that they still develop as people—it’s all handled with such warmth.

Here’s a polished, warm review you can use: --- This was an easy, charming read with plenty to enjoy. The two ex-cops turned bookshop owners make for wonderfully likeable protagonists, and their banter brings a gentle humour to the story. The Havelock North setting adds a lovely sense of place, giving the whole novel that familiar, small-town cosiness. The plot unfolds at a relaxed pace, offering just enough mystery to keep you turning the pages without ever straying from its comforting, feel-good tone. It’s a very ordinary cosy crime in the best possible way—light, amusing, and perfect for a quiet afternoon.
