The one things that grabs me, with regard to Kristin Hannah's books, is that I'm part of someone's life, lived experiences, their journey. Her stories are not pacey (although some individual chapters are) but they are human. They are focused on the women behind the events, behind history, the ones who day to day keep their families and countries going, but who are never acknowledged through glorification in the media. This is my second read of hers. I have read so much fiction centred on the lived experiences during WWII, but this sat differently. The last fifth of the book, I couldn't stop and shed tears as journeys found their end. If WWII as a background doesn't grip you, read her book The Women set within the Vietnam War.
