Amazing how someone can reach such an achievement despite racism and poverty.
175 pages were set in Cairo, yet we did not learn anything about the food, the culture, or the people - they were portrayed with "grim stares and narrow eyes of the Egyptians", in contrast to the second half of the book, with the Italians, the food, the hardship of the people and how they suffered was described in detail. Disappointing.
Excellent debut novel.
