  • I Am Not Esther

    By Fleur Beale
    4 stars

Nice to read a book I've only known before through student essays.

  • Hostage

    By Guy Delisle
    4 stars

An excellent graphic novel that tells the story of Christophe André's kidnapping in Chechneya in 1991.

  • Notes from Underground

    By Fyodor Dostoevsky
    4 stars

Not everyone's cup of tea, I'll bet. He's a bit all up in his head is our narrator, but darkly funny.

  • Wundersmith

    By Jessica Townsend
    3 stars

Recommended by my daughter. I very much enjoyed the first one, but found this one a little more formulaic. Great world-building and a strong sense of humour. I think it's definitely a classic series that I'd recommend. I may try the others in the series. (Miss 10 recommends Silverborn especially).

  • Intercultural Competence: An Emerging Focus in International Higher Education. In The SAGE Handbook of International Higher Education (pp. 283–304). SAGE Publications, Incorporated.

My final EDUC 504 reading for the weekend. It's an overview of some of the efforts being made by tertiary institutions across the world to develop the skills and attitudes of intercultural competence.

  • A review of the acculturation experiences of international students. International Journal of Intercultural Relations, 35(6), 699–713.

    By Smith, R. A., & Khawaja, N. G.
    2 stars

Another EDUC 504 reading. A bit dense for me on such a glorious day as this one.

  • Intercultural relations in plural societies: research derived from Canadian multiculturalism policy. Canadian Ethnic Studies Journal, 43(3), 5–19.

    By John W. Berry
    3 stars

More reading for EDUC504. This is a paper that speaks quite a bit to our times. Interesting to reflect on multiculturalism as policy, rather than description.

  • More equal than others. Excerpt from Cultures and organizations: software of the mind. In Cultures and organizations: software of the mind (pp. 39–55)

    By Hofstede, G., & Hofstede, G. J. (2005)
    4 stars

Required reading for EDUC504, part of my MSSL course. Looks at power relations in society in terms of "power distance" and draws some useful contrasts between the types of educational expectations and relationships found in large- and small-distance societies.

  • I am Dyslexic - An Interactive and Informative Guide

    By Chanelle Moriah
    4 stars

This is another useful and informative guide to neurodivergence from Chanelle Moriah. I gained a lot from their other two books on autism and ADHD, and thoroughly recommend them. This one is also a handy literacy guide to the complexities of reading and writing acquisition. Useful reading for all teachers.
