Love the first half! A retired art teacher journeys to her new home on an island near Auckland. Finally, she has new views to paint; everything is far removed from the life she once lived. On her first night in the house on the hill, a fierce and relentless knocking begins... From here, the narrative of the new beginning is completely thwarted by intrusions from her past. I lost patience, annoyed by the shift of focus, and rushed to the end (where a previous reader had written "WHAT?" in pencil.
Nostaligic for those of us raised in 1980s NZ. Has dark undercurrents winding through the memorable features of the era. A quick, effortless read that's not without substance, and leaves you with a little chill.
Confronting in the most challenging ways. Five stars because the author is a genius, but noone likes a book such as this. Will need a lighter read before tackling Part II.
